Augustinerkeller
Did you know that the Augustinerkeller is one of the last ancient monastery cellars in Vienna's historic city center? The splendid ancient vaulting of the cellar, which has been well preserved throughout the centuries and can still be seen, was part of the former fortifications of the Albertina Bastion which was built in the first half of the 16th century.
When the Ringstraße was built, the ancient city walls to which these ortifications belonged were partly removed. As a result the level of the street was changed so that nowadays the Augustinerkeller is in the peculiar position not to be downstairs like a usual cellar but to be located on the ground floor and even to have a first floor. Only in 1924 the former fortifications were rebuilt and changed into a restaurant.
Since 1954 our family has run the restaurant, and we are proud to have made Augustinerkeller a popular meeting place for lovers of the Viennese Heurigen both among local people and visitors.
